The Thompson Park Project - November 2007
Playground opens soon
By MARK GIBSON
of The Dalles Chronicle (reprinted, Dec 13, 2007)
Kids in The Dalles will be getting an extra Christmas present this holiday season: A new, extensive playground at Thompson Park.
The major components of the playground were installed Nov. 17, when over 40 volunteers from Home Depot, True North Productions and others gathered to mount the equipment. Lunch was provided by Burgerville. There is a “big list” of community business and individuals involved, said Wasco County Park and Recreation District executive director Scott Green. “Despite the rain, it went very well,” he said. “As soon as the soft fall is in, the fences will come down.”
Installation of the soft fall, a shredded wood fiber used to cushion falls, was delayed in part because of snow and the need for a wood border around playground. District crews continue to install the border, and the playground should be open for use by Christmas. Additional improvements, including handicapped accessibility, benches and landscaping, will be completed after the playground is open.
